Some chimney repairs turn out to be more than a surface refresh once the existing stucco comes off. YYC Today is featuring a recent Calgary project by High End Construction that moved from damaged details and removal through rebuilding, preparation, and a new finished stucco profile.

According to the project documentation, the work began by removing the old chimney stucco to expose the condition of the details beneath it. The existing plywood detail had deteriorated, so the repair required a rebuild of the chimney features before the new exterior layers could be applied.

Project at a glance: the team removed the old stucco, replaced rotten plywood detail, rebuilt the original chimney shape, installed new paper and wire, and completed the scratch coat and final finish.

What this chimney repair involved

01 · Removal

Expose the condition behind the finish

The old stucco and damaged material were removed so the existing chimney details could be assessed.

02 · Detail rebuild

Replace deteriorated plywood detail

The rotten plywood detail was replaced and the chimney features were rebuilt to their original shape.

03 · Exterior preparation

New paper and wire were installed before the stucco layers were applied.

04 · Final finish

Why the detail work matters

When a damaged exterior finish is removed, the visible surface can reveal work that needs to be addressed before a new finish goes on. In this case, the project documentation shows the repair progressing from deteriorated chimney details to a rebuilt profile, followed by the new layers and finish.
