Calgary’s Exterior Painting Season Is Here — What Homeowners Need to Know Before Booking a Painter
Late May marks the start of Calgary’s reliable exterior painting window — a period that runs through to late September before temperatures become too unpredictable for proper paint adhesion. Local painters say the season books faster than most homeowners expect, and that preparation decisions made before the first brush hits the siding determine whether the job lasts three years or twelve.

Norbert Hamar, owner of Admirari Solutions, has been doing exterior and interior painting work across Calgary and Airdrie for several years. He answered the questions homeowners most often get wrong when planning an exterior paint project.
When Can You Actually Paint Exteriors in Calgary?
“Most manufacturers want you above 10°C for application and curing, and below about 30°C,” Hamar said. “In Calgary, that window runs from roughly mid-May to mid-October in a good year. But you also need to watch for Chinooks — a warm Chinook followed by a hard freeze within the cure window can cause problems.”
The practical implication: homeowners who want exterior work done this summer should be booking consultations now. “By mid-June, the reputable painters in this city are booked eight to ten weeks out.”

What Good Exterior Prep Actually Involves
The prep phase — power washing, scraping, sanding, caulking gaps, priming bare wood — typically takes longer than the painting itself. “Paint over a dirty or cracked surface and it will fail early,” Hamar said. “We’ve repainted Calgary exteriors that should have lasted fifteen years but were peeling by year three because prep was skipped.”
Questions to Ask Any Calgary Exterior Painter Before You Book
What does your prep process include specifically — and how long does prep take relative to painting?
Are you using a 100% acrylic exterior product? Which manufacturer and line?
How do you handle wood rot or caulking failure discovered during prep?
What is your warranty on the work, and what does it cover?
Who will actually be on site — you or a crew I haven’t met?
Colour Choices That Work in Calgary’s Light
Calgary’s high-altitude light is more intense in summer with a cool undertone in winter. “Warm greys, greiges, and soft whites tend to hold well in Calgary’s light,” Hamar said. “High-contrast trim has become very popular, especially in SW Calgary — it reads well photographically and adds definition to the elevation.”
